On Shavuot we celebrate the giving of Torah on Mt. Sinai. But how did the Five Books of Moses as a literary document come about? More importantly, as contemporary Jews, what larger teaching can we draw from this understanding of Torah?

June 4, Shavuot Morning
"Hearing the Voice of  Sinai Today: Women Wrestling with Torah"
Services/Yizkor: 10am

Using The Torah: A Women's Commentary as a guide, we will explore the biblical account of the divine revelation at Mt. Sinai. Our focus will be on Moses' command to "not go near a woman" in advance of this dramatic moment (Exodus 19:15).

Wednesday, June 4, 10am-12:30pm
We begin our celebration of Shavuot at 10am with a musical Family Shavuot Service led by Rabbi Julia - singing, movement, discussion, and storytelling about the holiday of Shavuot. At 11am we head downstairs to the kitchen to create delicious Shavuot delicacies with Patrizia - blintzes and tiramisu! It is a tradition on Shavuot to eat dairy foods because in the verse from Song of Songs (4:11), it is written "Like honey and milk [the Torah] lies under your tongue;" just as a baby is sustained by milk, we are spiritually sustained by Torah. We'll say Kiddush together and taste our efforts. We then join the main sanctuary for the end of the Shavuot holiday service, followed by congregational Kiddush lunch. The Toddlers' Room on our second floor balcony will be open for small children accompanied by an adult. Toys and games are available and the room is equipped with audio feed from the sanctuary.

A Message from the President
Dear members,
We are glad to announce that through the devoted work of Executive Vice President Jeremy Becker and of Rabbi Aigen, Rabbi Julia Appel's contract has been renewed until the end of May 2015. Her position for the new period will carry extended hours and new responsibilities, to include outreach and volunteer engagement amongst others, but will maintain its focus on youth, families, and holiday programming. It will also carry a new title, that of Assistant Rabbi, in recognition of Rabbi Julia's significant contribution to our community and to honor her professional standing. We know Rabbi Julia will continue to enrich, engage and challenge us, and we look forward to seeing her more often among us.
Sincerely,

Rosana Caplan

ATTENTION MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS

If you could ask your mother one question about her life, what would it be?
What is the most important thing a mother can pass on to her daughter?

Why Not Theatre is making a show about Montreal's Jewish women, and is looking for daughters, between the ages of 22 and 32, and their mothers (or mothers and their daughters) who are interested in creating and performing in it.
They are hoping to talk to people across the city about their experiences of being a woman and being Jewish, about their family traditions and how those feature in their lives, and about their most outrageous family stories. These stories will then be woven into a performance starring the mothers and daughters themselves.
No performance experience required. We're looking for real people and real stories!

If you're interested in finding out more about the project, and how to participate, please contact Poppy Keeling: poppy@complicite.org
The project will be created in association with Complicite and A Bit Off the Top
