Passover Yizkor Services at 10:00 am

Speaker:
Each year on the final day of Passover Yizkor we expand our Yizkor service to include a Yom Ha-Shoah Memorial. Remembering the Holocaust at Passover is fitting since the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising took place on the eve of the first Seder, 1943.

Our decision to connect our remembrance of the Shoah with Passover emerged from the deeper questions: How do we celebrate the Festival of Freedom and deliverance from slavery in the post-Holocaust age? How should the Shoah be remembered? What is the message we want to give to future generations?

This year our speaker will be Mr. Leo Dortort. Born in Gratz, Austria, Leo survived the war in Yugoslavia. In 1941, just before the Nazis invaded he managed to make his way to Palestine. While he survived, Leo's entire family perished in the Shoah.  Following the end of WW II and the birth of the State of Israel, Leo returned to Austria in order to reclaim his property according to the restitution agreements. In the early 1950's he made his way to Canada, where he continued his life as a businessman, married and raised a family. Leo will reflect on the role of Israel in redeeming the devastation of the Shoah.
