RABBI'S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,

It is now one week since Israel's Operation Pillar of Cloud began in response to the heavy rocket attacks that have been launched by Hamas against Israel's civilian population over the last several months. It was by all accounts an intolerable situation. As President Peres said, "The State of Israel and the residents of the south are under attack....rockets were fired at Israel, civilians were killed and babies were injured. Children in the south are living under the threat of falling rockets, they are seized by fear. There is no nation that loves peace and hates bloodshed like Israel. Our enemies are not the people of Gaza, our enemies are not the Muslim people. Our enemies are the terrorists who operate without reason and without thought."

The President stressed that Israel's hand is outstretched for peace but that Israel will do whatever is necessary to protect her citizens, "The world is beginning to understand that we are operating with responsibility and we do not take human life lightly. I don't know any country that would show restraint for as long as Israel did during the attacks on the south."

Many of us have family and friends in Israel and have been calling constantly to check on their safety and well-being. Following today's bus-bombing in Tel Aviv, I spoke with my niece, Nadine, who is doing alright, but says that the constant sirens and running for shelter is stressful. As I said last week in shul, our hearts and minds are, as always, linked with our people, Am Yisrael, especially now at this time of war, and we stand united with them. As of this writing a cease-fire was announced to begin tonight at 9 PM. We pray this cease-fire will hold and bring a more lasting resolution, putting an end to the cycle of violence. May this latest battle be one that paves the way for a new path to peace.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Ron Aigen
